Chapter 8

It had been 4 days now and Evan was still standing in the centre of the rune room struggling to grasp his magic; sweat pouring down his temples as glowing crystal blue eyes focused on his task. The shuffling of papers echoed across the room as Ilteri worked away at his desk occasionally looking up to check on Evan’s progress and offer up an indifferent comment.

‘Straining your muscles will only tire you out further, you are exercising your magic not your body. Focus on pushing your magic out of your hand,’ Ilteri instructed, his scrutinising eyes flickering to Evan’s almost constipated form, before ignoring him and going back to work.

Evan’s eyes snapped to Ilteri’s form, his face pinched as if he had eaten something especially sour. He had learnt how to move magic and mould it within himself fairly quickly, but the next task was centring his magic within his hand to form a fire, similar to the light he had seen Thelden create under the arena. It was not easy and after days with no progress and dwindling coaching from his new teacher, who’s seemingly favourite method of teaching was passing him a few books and telling him to study, Evan was ready to snap.

‘It’s not working!’ Evan shouted in frustration, dropping his hand down from its raised position as he turned to Ilteri in anger. ‘Nothing you tell me to do helps and I’ve read those books over twice! Maybe if you actually taught me instead of sitting there doing whatever, I might have actually finished by now!’ Evan accused irritably, his eyes flickering as heated magic bubbled beneath the surface. Ilteri looked up from his work calmly, his relaxed position on the chair serving only to irritate Evan even further.

‘Read them again,’ Ilteri answered dismissively, waving his hand towards the volumes stacked on the engraved wooden table, before casting his eyes back to the rune he was working on.

Evan lost it. The frustration over his unsuccessful attempts, the anger at the apathetic Ilteri, the confusion and worry over his future self, his misery at the ever bleak outlook on finding his way home. All of his overwhelming pent up emotions trapped inside him erupted and like a relinquishing floodgate, his magic flooded out of him, riding on a wave of uncontrolled emotion as his eyes blazed into a light.

Fire was everywhere and whereas before Evan couldn’t push even a small amount of magic through his palm, now it was bursting through every crevice and oh boy, did it make its self known. A hot orange blaze circled around the air, its lashing whips softening as Evan was filled with triumphant euphoria at his achievement. The flames danced, growing in a wild display of prideful victory. Evan was entranced, it was like a living breathing part of himself he was meeting for the first time and despite the underlying heat of the fire threatening to purge anything that challenged it, it did not burn him.

Wait, what about
